The Land, Kawichí in Rarámuri ra'icha, is where we try to do most of our work. We currently do work at 12400 Big Tujunga Canyon MRCA space and Oro Vista MRCA Space, and hike, document native and invasive plants, and remove invasives after consultation with trusted organizations and culture bearers. We plan to work on a project near the Hollywood Reservoir as well!
The open land of Los Angeles has many people rooting for its restoration. We run into hikers, mountain bikers (who do their own cleanups), horse riders, and County workers. What we would like is to add more Indigenous voices into this conversation. The local Indigenous people of this part of Southern California are the Chumash, Tongva, Tataviam, and Serrano. These peoples deserve more stewardship, autonomy, and connection to the land.
As Los Angeles is also a place of immigrants, and especially Southern Indigenous immigrants--Nahua, K'iche, Zapotec, and others--we believe they should be offered opportunities to reconnect to the land as well. Matétera bá gite kawichírema.
A beautiful space, spared from development that many groups are seeking to restore. We have documented this site and removed a lot of invasives.
A popular hiking spot in Sunland. We've helped remove tamarisk from this riparian area and done trash cleanups.
